SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — James Walker Smith died March 14, 2019, at Springfield, Mo. He was 84.

A Celebration of Life will be 2 p.m. Sunday March 24 at Hillcrest Presbyterian Church, 818 E. Norton Road, Springfield, Mo., with Reverend Jack Carmack officiating. Visitation will be held, at the church, following the service.

Opal Morine Ireland

Nov. 6, 1930 – March 15, 2019

OVERBROOK — Opal Morine Ireland, Overbrook, died Friday, March 15, 2019, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was 88.

She was born Nov. 6 1930, at Dearborn, Mo., the daughter of William Albert Richey and Laura Catherine Mauzey Richey. She grew up in the Kansas City area attending Wyandotte High School, Kansas City.

Tonoleta “Connie” Lomax

Dec. 8, 1925 – March 13, 2019

TOPEKA — Tonoleta “Connie” Nations Lomax, Osage City, died Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka. She was 93

She was born Dec. 8, 1925 at Brownsville, Texas, the daughter of Andrew Jackson and Allein Staggs Nations.

She married Leonard Earl Nech in Texas. He preceded her in death. Later, she was joined in marriage to Virgil Lomax. He also preceded her in death.

She was a loving homemaker and mother, all her life.

Mary Louise Hoy

Aug. 6, 1950 – March 14, 2019

OVERBROOK — Mary Louise Hoy, Overbrook, died March 14, 2019, at her home. She was 68.

She was born Aug. 6, 1950, at Twin Mound, the daughter of Floyd Trout and Mary Alice Schirmer Trout. She was a lifelong Osage County resident graduating from Overbrook High School with the class of 1969.

She married Lloyd Hoy Jr., Feb. 21, 1969, at her parents’ home at Twin Mound. They just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He survives of the home.

Britta Sue Browning Whitaker

Dec. 13, 1959 – March 11, 2019

TOPEKA — Britta Sue Browning Whitaker died Monday, March 11, 2019, at her home in Topeka. She was 59.

She was born Dec. 13, 1959, at Topeka, the daughter of Richard and Marla Schultz Browning. She grew up in Topeka, where she graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1977. She also lived in Bremerton, Washington, Kansas City and Gardner before moving back to Topeka.

She worked in banking for many years and was a trustee officer. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Vassar.

Rodger William Lee

Nov. 5, 1928 – March 9, 2019

TOPEKA — Rodger William Lee, Topeka, died Saturday, March 9, 2019, at his home. He was 90.

He was born Nov. 5, 1928, at Richland, the son of John and Minnie Dodds Lee. He graduated from Topeka High School. In 1950, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in Germany as Sargent in charge of regimental communications until his discharge in 1953.

Ethel M. Parker

April 15, 1941 – Jan. 4, 2019

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Ethel M. Parker died Jan. 4, 2019, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte, Fla. She was 77.

She was born April 15, 1941, at Elizabeth City, Colo.

She married Phillip Larry Parker June 6, 1959. He preceded her in death.

Ruth Pearl Hickey

Jan. 18, 1929 – March 2, 2019

OSAGE CITY — Ruth Pearl Hickey died Saturday, March 2, 2019, at her home in Osage City. She was 90.

She was born Jan. 18, 1929, on the family farm near Olivet, the daughter of Arthur and Elva Stephens Jones. She grew up in the Olivet area and lived in Lyndon for many years before moving to Osage City in 1993.

She worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance, Topeka, and was a homemaker for most of her life.

She married Merle Hickey Sept. 10, 1945, at Seattle, Wash. He preceded her in death on Sept. 10, 1991.

Gary Dean Thompson

May 2, 1937 – Feb. 28, 2019

VASSAR — Gary Dean Thompson died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019, at his home near Vassar. He was 81.

He was born May 2, 1937, near Michigan Valley, the son of Ernest and Eunice Warren Thompson. He lived most of his life around the Michigan Valley community and lived near Vassar for the last nine years.

VASSAR — Gary Dean Thompson died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019, at his home near Vassar. He was 81.

He was born May 2, 1937, near Michigan Valley, the son of Ernest and Eunice Warren Thompson. He lived most of his life around the Michigan Valley community and lived near Vassar for the last nine years.

He worked for DuPont, in Topeka, for over 30 years and always farmed and raised cattle. He was a leader in 4-H for many years.
